The Cooking Canon - Rev. John Eley
The irony does not escape me as I suspect it might have escaped Rev. John Eley, that this book could, and would, never be part of the gastronomic canon. There’s a weird recipe for ‘Virgin Mary’s Soup’, opposite something called ‘Mystery Mousse’ and tonnes of other dodgy shit to boot. Not all the recipes are bad, but there’s not a lot of good ones either. The allure, to TV audiences at least, of the Rev. John Eley, along with all the popularity of all that shit, shit music, is one of the great mysteries of the 1980s. He does have a good line in 2-out-of-10 jokes about nothing much at all but never mind all that: JUST LOOK AT THE COVER HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Even a glance at his beaming face, bald head and buck teeth and my spirits lift. Do yourself a favour, buy this book, stick on your mantle piece among the family pictures and your mum’s ashes and every day, will be a little brighter - which for a tenner, is BLOODY GOOD VALUE. Amen, chef. Amen.
Publisher/Publisher: The BBC, 1984
Paperback. A second printing of the first edition.
Conditon: Good
